Guides and best practices for Smart Bundles & Margin Guard.
Getting started
Smart Bundles & Margin Guard helps you model product costs, save bundle discount plans, and separately configure Shopify app discounts that respect your gross-margin floor.
There are three things to set up: your cost of goods (COGS), your margin floor, and (optionally) your first bundle discount plan.
1. Set your cost of goods (COGS)
Open Products from the left navigation. Each product variant from your Shopify catalog appears here. Enter the unit cost for each variant so the app can calculate true gross margin.
COGS is variant-specific. You can edit one variant at a time or use CSV import, then review the saved value before using that variant in a bundle discount plan or separately configured Shopify app discount.
2. Configure your margin floor
Open Margin floor from the navigation. The floor is the minimum projected gross-margin percentage the app uses when evaluating bundle discount plans and separately configured Shopify app discounts.
Review the calculation with representative products before activating a discount. Missing or invalid COGS is denied by default so an incomplete cost record cannot silently approve a discount.
3. Create a bundle discount plan
Open Bundle discount plans → Create discount plan. Pick product variants, set a percentage or fixed-amount planned discount, and review the derived price and projected gross margin. The app rejects a plan whose discount leaves no price or puts projected margin below the configured floor.
Saving creates an app-managed modeling record only. It does not create or activate a sellable Shopify bundle product, and it does not publish a Shopify discount.
How margin enforcement works
A Shopify app discount is configured separately from a bundle discount plan. That discount is backed by a Shopify Function, so no theme code is installed. The Function returns the configured discount only when the cart has valid variant COGS and the projected margin meets the saved floor.
The Function governs discounts created through this app; it does not inspect or cancel unrelated Shopify or third-party discounts. Order-level reporting is available after Shopify sends the corresponding order webhook.
Frequently asked questions
Does this change my shipping options? No. The released Shopify Function does not reorder, hide, or change shipping options, and the app does not request shipping-management scopes.
Does it work without third-party cookies? Yes. The app authenticates with Shopify session tokens and works entirely inside the Shopify Admin.
What data do you store? App-specific data (your COGS, margin settings, and decision log), scoped to your store. See the Privacy Policy and Data Processing Agreement linked from the app for full details.
What data the app accesses
For a plain-English breakdown of exactly which Shopify scopes the app requests, which scopes it deliberately does NOT request, and what it stores about your store, see the public Transparency page: /transparency
